Thanks for sharing this Michael – it’s great to hear the memories and experiences people have of London, I imagine that was a magical moment. I’ll have a look into that about the Royal Artillery gun and battery, sounds like it could be an interesting update for the guide – thank you for the tip.

As a 12 year old boy in 1947/48 I cycled to the park with my brother and took a couple of photos with my father’s Brownie box camera and still have one with deer browsing. The park was still quite wild just after the war with few visitors. We entered the wood via a gap in the fence feeling very guilty and came across a green shaded glade deep inside. Absolute silence and a magical experience for two young lads enjoying the countryside so close to our Streatham home. I believe a Royal Artillery gun & searchlight battery was stationed there during the war, but may be mistaking this for the one at Mitcham Common.
